11.3 Why the Citation Matters

The surviving chronology contains a major gap:

1965 documented parachute and stunt work → [largely undocumented period] → 1988 SAFE award

The original SAFE citation could potentially identify:

  • Schmoll’s employer;
  • his professional title;
  • a specific rescue, test, or survival incident;
  • his technical specialty at the time;
  • possible Stanley or UPCO involvement; and
  • the people or project associated with the award.

For that reason, the original 1988 SAFE award citation is probably the highest-value unrecovered document concerning Schmoll’s later career.
