The publicly available award list does not state:
- what happened;
- where it happened;
- the exact date of the underlying event;
- Schmoll’s employer;
- whether the event involved YANKEE or RANGER;
- whether it involved a parachute;
- whether it involved an aircraft accident or rescue;
- whether Schmoll was himself a test subject;
- whether another person’s life was saved; or
- whether it had any connection to his 1965 stunt work.
Because SAFE describes the award as recognizing a recent contribution, it would be especially unwise to assume that it honored the Rod Pack stunt 23 years earlier.
